Heidi Ackerman
Heidi Ackerman’s avant-garde collections combine style,
sustainability and the bizarre. Studying fashion in Toronto,
Sydney and Brussels, Heidi has since created two well received
collections here in Toronto.
At the 2008 Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week Heidi
was awarded the Beefeater Innovative Spirit Award and went
on to showcase her debut collection at LG Fashion Week in
March 2009.
Heidi Ackerman has become known in Toronto for her
otherworldly yet playful knitwear. By combining hand
and machine knitting techniques Heidi creates
graphic and eco-friendly textiles while experimenting
with volume and new forms.
Heidi’s work has been featured in editorials in Fashion,
Dress to Kill, Spade and ION. Her work is also available in
L’Armoire Du Styliste in New York City.
Through her work Heidi Ackerman strives to challenge
Canadian preconceptions of fashion and to help put Canada
on the international fashion map.
Interpretation of Theme
Éthéré is an avant-garde collection for the new iconic woman; otherworldly and ethereal. With this collection Heidi Ackerman
explores the realms between illusion and reality. Sharp and dramatic silhouettes are created by Experimenting with bizarre
and geometric volumes.
By using machine and hand knit pieces Heidi is able to blur
the lines between illusion and reality. Creating bold silhouett
to empower and transform the wearer to new heights.
As is indicative of Heidi Ackerman’s style she has searched
out unusual sustainable materials such as cork and uses them
to interpret the human body in new extraordinary ways.
Inspired by the glass and steel architecture of Berlin
as well as the geometric prints and juxtapositions of the
Memphis design group Heidi creates a new type of architecture on
and of the body. This new terrain of the body will carry into
the exhibit space which will be transformed into a subterranean
landscape using a variety of geometric forms.
In collaboration with artist and Accessory designer Mathieu
Missiaen (Ndeur) the complete look and silhouette of the Éthéré collection will
be created from head to toe.
