Interpretation of Theme

In my collection, I am exploring the line between fear and courage. Some people have difficulty crossing that line. Others don’t want to cross that line and some skip through it like it’s nothing. For all people though, I believe it is a line that should be crossed to gain excitement, happiness, understanding and meaning. I associate this with risk taking and exploring something out of the ordinary because when you do that, the outcome can be surprising, yet exhilarating and beautiful.

My life experiences have led me to want to eliminate the fear and live life with courage. I want to have the courage to take risks, achieve my goals, be successful, be happy and be free to do what I want. I experienced a breakthrough when I discovered my true passion for fashion design. Being in a family of business men and women, engineers and computer experts, and living in a city based around industrialization and the working class, being a fashion designer seemed risky, unrealistic and far-fetched. However, that didn’t stop me. I believe there will always be reasons to be afraid of the unknown and the hardest part is just having some faith in yourself. Now, I continue trying to work towards thinning the line between fear and courage in work, family, friends and love.

The name of my collection is Unexpected because that is how I perceive myself. Each piece shows a very simple, plain and conservative front. This is a representation of how others may perceive me as. It is also a reflection of my fear of being my true self. When my collection is viewed from the back, there is more vibrancy, complexity and excitement. There is more careful attention to details and design. When my collection is viewed I hope for it to be an unexpected surprise to people. I want them to feel the relief as they cross over the line.
