Rachel Dinh

House of Dinh

Nina Dinh and Rachel Dinh are the duo behind the ready-to-wear label, House of Dinh. They are not only childhood friends but blood relatives working towards launching a successful business venture together. Rachel was born in 1986 in Hai Phong, Vietnam and immigrated to Canada at the tender age of four. This move allowed her to meet Nina, a cousin whom was born in Toronto in 1987. They became lifelong friends and kept in close contact while living in the creative downtown Toronto area. In 1997, Rachel moved to Kitchener, Ontario but that did not stop the duo from communicating with one another. Life took them both in separate directions and made them into separate individuals. But fate would play a role in their reunion.

The Dinh family tree has always had creative abilities which have propelled them into pursuing their dreams. Even apart they enrolled in the similar creative classes including fashion, fine arts, graphic design and etc. Never losing sight of their creative childhood ambitions, both Rachel and Nina attended Seneca College for Fashion Arts. They have grown to become two different individuals but share similar attributes and styles. Both strive for perfection and are extremely meticulous in regards to their clothing and design. Their style consists of clean lines accommodated with their favourite essential black and white colour palette. They use only the finest fabrics and pay close attention to details and finishes resulting in immaculate executions. Together they hope to achieve great success with the House of Dinh line. As they work towards their goal they live their lives day by day and go wherever fashion may take them.

Interpretation of Theme

The first idea that came to mind in regards to the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche theme “Between the Lines” was the common saying to “Read between the lines”. We took this literally and instead of reading between the lines you will see between the lines in our collection. A poem was found with the same title of the Scotiabank theme and is the main inspiration behind the clothing (found above). The poem’s main focus is on the idea of not judging a book by its cover. The reader needs to read between the lines and interpret the story in his / her own way since every story can be interpreted differently.

The House of Dinh collection is comprised of twelve outfits. Six models will come out on the runway with the initial clean lines and simple outer garments which is meant to be act as a metaphor to the theme “Between the Lines”. It is our way of asking the audience whether or not they are looking carefully at what they are seeing. Each model will reveal one by one the inside garments which are detailed and full of bright and fun colours. The inner garments are meant to play with the eye and grab the viewer’s attention. The colour palette for the initial outfits will be off-white and the inner garments will consist of bright and bold colours such as yellow, black, blue, green, pink and purple. The concept is to get the audience to look at the outer garments believing that this is the collection however unknown to them once the models hit the end of the runway, the outer garments will be removed / changed and behold, underneath will be an unexpected surprise.

The theme will help maintain the concept behind the collection but we have thought of different ways for each garment to burst onto the runway. We plan on giving the audience subtle hints onto where they have to see between the lines of what the inner garments would be from just looking at the outer garments. For example, one model will walk out in a simple trapeze dress with a clutch in her hand. Once she reaches the end of the runway she will whip out a bright hot pink skirt from the purse and wrap it around her waist and this will create the transformation of the second outfit. First and foremost we hope our collection concept will grant us the opportunity to show at the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche designer competition. Secondly, we want to give the audience a show that they will talk about and remember for years to come.
