Stephanie Storm is a clothing designer for the emerging label Glyphiks. She started her company in 2000, deciding to embark on an adventuresome business idea: Artistically simple Canadian clothing. A graduate from the University of Waterloo Fine Arts department, she used her skills in computer graphics, sculpture and photography to develop a clothing line that appeals to women with an eye for something different. The following year, Stephanie attended the Venture Creation Program and learned the necessary skills to run the business. Today, the label is going strong, as it continues to grow and evolve into a unique alternative to mass produced clothing. Glyphiks has different outlook on the Fashion Industry. Our goal is not to mass produce our garments, but to bring our customer a sense of individuality by only doing small productions runs with high quality fabrics and unique designs. We do our best to promote green living by creating a garment that will stand the test of time, and we are conscious of limiting our waste and avoiding plastic packaging. All manufacturing is sweat shop free in Canada.
Interpretation of Theme
Between the lines can be interpreted many ways and I struggled with this concept until just recently when
I experienced a defining moment and realized that our lives are constantly being lived between the lines,
whether they are self imposed or imposed upon. From the moment of birth to our eventual death we are constantly
being challenged. There is always a point in our lives where we must face our fears and come to a realization
about who we are.
For me, my defining moment came when I experienced a really difficult year and decided to change my perspective.
I was always setting goals and marking out a time line to set up my future success, pressuring myself to meet the
deadlines so that one day I could go from obscurity to success. Through self imposed pressure and failure I finally
crossed the line and decided my attitude needed to change.
I recently started to teach pre-teens Fashion Design and through the minds of children I learned to relax
and enjoy the moment. Children do not impose such harsh lines to their success so why should we as adults. I
started to realize that I actually enjoy what I do even though it is difficult and not financially rewarding.
I just completed another week of Design camp and we had a small runway show where the students presented their
designs to friends and family. The excitement and talent of children with unbridled creativity left me with a
deserved feeling of success. It was one small moment but it changed my attitude. Success is not measured by
fame and money. It is all about attitude. Later that same evening I had another show that was poorly planned
and lacked attendance. Many of the other designers felt used and upset. I made the best of it and actually
had fun! I am in no rush to be successful. I am successful and I now just enjoy the moment.
I feel that “between the lines” is representative of our lives and our perspective. It is the defining
moment that we should all experience in order to better understand ourselves. My collection embodies living
in the moment and is representative of my beliefs.
